Hiking to Rimpar with castle

Hiking and Sightseeing-Trip to Rimpar, an small town 8km north of Würzburg. I would like to invite you to this tour to the rural environment. My idea is an smaller group of max. 10 people, but it won’t be a problem if we are more.

plan:

  • walking through the landscape north to Würzburg to the place of Rimpar
  • If you want we would have a little lunch at a local restaurant
  • we will visit the castle of Rimpar (eventually with guided tour), there are also some nice little museums in it, these are just opened every second sunday for 2 hours (free entrance, ist run voluntary)
  • famous altarpiece of the Würzburgian sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider in the former monestary church in Maidbronn
  • going back, passing by an battlefield of the napoleonic wars

The castle of Rimpar has a nearly 700 year old history with a close (sometimes bloody) relationship with Würzburg. You may not heared of Rimpar before, but maybe you have heared before the name of the most famous emigrants from Rimpar: the 3 Lehman brothers. They founded a bank in the United States in the 19th century. That bank collapsed in the year 2008 and triggered an global financial crisis. Lehman Brothers Inc.

themed tour about farming

Cereals, vegetables, vegetable oils, sugar. We eat every single day. But who has ever taken a close look at the production of our basic foods? Agriculture is our livelihood and shapes the character of almost all cultures in the world. I would like to organize a small themed tour in which I show agriculture around Würzburg, directly on site. Since the city is not very big, you don’t have to walk long distances. The fields are often found right on the edge of the residential areas. I chose a suitable place for myself.

I come from a small village and have direct family connections with the farmer’s profession. In my youth, I occasionally drove tractors across fields and was present at the birth of calves. I’m not an expert, but I have a certain basic understanding of the subject.

There is change in agriculture throughout the year. Each season of the year there are different tillage steps or the plants are in a different growth phase. From plowing the field, to the growing of the young cereal plants, the yellow seas of rapeseed to the forests of maize and the harvest, there is always something else to discover. That’s why this tour is a little different every time. In 2 to 3 hours we will stop at different stations.

Where? The meeting point is at the Würzburg main station (Hauptbahnhof).
From there we go out of town on foot. It doesn’t take long.
When?On weekends or afternoons during the week. It can also be interesting in autumn / winter.
Who long?about 2-3 hours
costs?none

The place we’re going to is still in the official city area of Würzburg. It is north of the old town. There is a path that is very popular with hikers and cyclists. This path is ideal because a lot of crops are grown here in a small space. Only a few hundred meters apart you can find wheat, rape, beet, barley, corn, oats, etc.

in april the plants begin to grow
in june its looking different

trip to Veitshöchheim

The rococo style garden (Rokokogarten) and castle of Veitshöchheim is one of the main sights in the nearby area of Würzburg. Those who like the Würzburg “Residenz” and the “Hofgarten” should also have a look to the summer residence of the former emporers of Würzburg! We will go by boat on the river Main (about 40 minutes). We will go to the garden, where I could tell you something about it and show my favorite places there. You will see the nice little castle (going inside is possible with a little fee). The small town of Veitshöchheim is also nice to see. If you like we can also let the trip end in an restaurant or Biergarten directly at the river. The trip would start 12 or 13 o’clock and ends at 16 or 17 o’clock (both at the Main in the city centre). If you dont have enough time you can go back earlier by ship.

Where?the trip begins and ends in Würzburg, at the river Main, Alter Kranen
When?by demand at weekends, saturdy or sunday
Meeting at ca. 11:30, arrival in Würzburg in the afternoon, ca. 17:00 until 18:00
How much will it cost?fees:
for the ship (both directions): 13€ (at a certain ship)
Entrance into the garden is free
optional: ticket for the castle: 4,50€ (normal price, students may pay less)
Why with me?You can do this tour definitely alone. But because I was there several times I can tell and show things to you, that an “normal” visitor wouldn’t notice.

Just mail me, if you are interested.

at the ship
